o One in Three CDs Sold Worldwide is Pirated, Report Says
Madrid -- One in three CDs sold worldwide is a pirated copy, according
to a new report from the International Federation of the Phonographic
Industry (IFPI). A total of 1.2 billion pirated discs were sold in 2004, or
34% of all discs sold worldwide, though the growth of disc piracy
slowed to its lowest level in five years. Sales of pirated music exceeded
legitimate music sales in a record 31 countries last year, including 10
countries where the IFPI called for urgent government intervention:
Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Paraguay, Russia,
Spain and the Ukraine. The IFPI launched the report in Spain, which it
considers Europe's most serious piracy problem country, "where
rampant street CD piracy has shrunk the legitimate market by one third
in the last three years".
